What to hand to the AI and what to keep

What to hand to the AI and what to keep

Most arguments about automation answer the wrong question. The question is not whether you trust the machine. The question is which decisions the machine has an information advantage on, and which ones it does not.

That split is not philosophy. You can use it daily.

Where the machine beats you

Anything that is high volume, fast feedback and many simultaneous variables. It can set bids across hundreds of thousands of auctions at once and still make a reasonable call in places you would never even look. That covers bidding, weighting across times of day and devices, and how traffic is distributed across search terms and ad variants.

If you insist on doing that by hand, you are not competing on strategy. You are competing on compute. That is not a contest you win.

Where you beat the machine

Anything that is about the business and is not present in the data.

What a customer is worth to you. The system only knows what you pass it. If you do not know what a customer is worth in year two, neither does it.

Who you do not want. Exclusions are business decisions. To the machine a bad lead is still a conversion, if you labelled it as one.

What the offer is. The machine does not help at this level. If the offer is weaker than the competitor's, bidding will at best buy you the same result at a higher price.

What your brand sounds like. Machine written copy can be correct and still sound foreign to your own customers. Only a person notices that.

When to stop. The system has no opinion on whether this growth is currently profitable. You do.

The practical test

Before a decision, ask: if the answer follows entirely from the last thirty days of ad data, hand it to the machine. If it needs anything that lives outside the account, it is a human decision and it stays one.

Most failed automation does not fail because too much was handed over. It fails because nobody decided what would not be.

If a competitor gives more for the same price, bidding will at best buy you the same result at a higher cost. How to see where your offer actually stands.
