B2B Demand Generation vs Lead Generation: Why Cheap MQLs Starve Your Sales Team
Why low-cost MQLs rarely become closed revenue, and how to structure B2B Google Ads campaigns around buyer demand rather than form fills.
In enterprise B2B sales, companies do not buy products. Committees do.
According to Gartner research, the typical enterprise buying group involves six to ten decision-makers. Each stakeholder conducts independent research, brings conflicting internal priorities to the table, and evaluates vendors through a different functional lens. The software engineer researches API latency; the VP of Operations evaluates compliance and workflow changes; the Chief Financial Officer checks licensing models and payback timelines.
If your paid acquisition treats each searcher as an isolated transactional lead, your campaigns will underperform. You end up pitching high-level business transformation to engineers looking for syntax documentation, or serving technical spec sheets to finance executives.
Account-Based Paid Search synchronises high-intent search capture with committee awareness. Here is how to build that system.
One of the most common mistakes in B2B PPC is treating all industry searches as equal.
Consider two search queries in the enterprise data storage sector:
how to configure s3 lifecycle policies via terraformcloud storage data compliance solutions enterprise pricingQuery #1 is technical research. It is performed by an individual contributor looking to solve a problem this afternoon. If you send that engineer to an aggressive demo booking page with four mandatory corporate qualification dropdowns, they will bounce immediately.
Query #2 is commercial investigation. It is performed by an enterprise architect, director of infrastructure, or procurement lead preparing a vendor shortlist. That searcher expects a focused overview of security certifications, multi-cloud compatibility, and a direct path to speak with a solutions architect.
As I outlined in my piece on why direct response PPC requires a specialised approach, every paid campaign must deliver the exact level of friction and detail the searcher expects. You cannot force a single generic sales pitch onto different functional roles.
Most marketers think Account-Based Marketing (ABM) is restricted to LinkedIn Ads and cold outbound email. That is a costly misconception.
While you cannot target individual corporate domains directly inside a Google Search auction, you can layer first-party account data onto your search campaigns:
Export your target account list from your CRM. Include known decision-makers, former pipeline contacts, and newsletter subscribers from enterprise target accounts. Upload these lists into Google Ads as Customer Match audiences.
Layer these audiences onto your core Search campaigns with the Observation setting. This allows you to monitor how target accounts interact with your search ads. Once you have sufficient volume, you can apply positive bid adjustments (e.g. +35% to +50%) to outbid competitors whenever a searcher from a named account searches for category keywords.
Equally important is audience exclusion. Create a dynamic CRM audience containing current clients, active support ticket submitters, and current employees. Apply this list as a negative audience across all acquisition campaigns. You should never pay 18 EUR a click for an existing client looking for your login portal.
Google Search captures active, explicit intent. LinkedIn Ads provides precise firmographic and job-title targeting. The power comes from combining the two.
When a decision-maker clicks a Google Search ad for a high-intent term (such as "enterprise erp migration partner"), drop a first-party tracking cookie with a custom event tag. Pass that segment into your retargeting pool.
Instead of running generic retargeting ads across the Google Display Network, synchronise that search intent with your LinkedIn campaign manager:
By the time your sales development representative sends a personalised outreach email, multiple stakeholders across the buying committee have already encountered your brand, reviewed your case studies, and validated your market positioning.
Standard last-click attribution collapses when deals involve multi-stakeholder committees. If an engineer discovers your company via Google Search in January, shares your documentation internally in February, and the VP of Operations fills out a contact form in March, last-click attribution credits the entire deal to direct traffic.

Account-Based Paid Search is not about increasing your total ad spend. It is about concentrating your capital on accounts that can actually sign six-figure contracts.
When you coordinate technical search intent, executive search intent, and multi-channel account retargeting, your pipeline velocity increases and sales cycles shorten.
