First party data is the part nobody can copy

First party data is the part nobody can copy

What the ad platforms offer is identical for everybody. Your competitor gets the same bidding, the same campaign types and broadly the same audiences. If that is all you build on, the difference comes down to budget size and luck.

There is one thing that is not shared: what you know about your own customers.

What that means concretely

Not a large data project. Four things, and all four are within reach of a small company.

You know where the people who bought came from. Not just the last click, but where they first met you. That requires the form or the order to store the campaign data, and for it to survive into the order record.

You know what they are worth. Not the first purchase, but what they brought over twelve or twenty four months. Without that, every acquisition decision is made blind.

You know who is a bad customer. The returner, the non payer, the unqualified lead. That is at least as valuable as the good list, because it can be used as an exclusion.

You have your own reach. An email list that lets you contact existing customers without paying for the access.

Why this matters particularly now

Because automated systems are exactly as good as the data they are given. Two companies use the same Smart Bidding. One passes back that a form arrived. The other passes back that this is a qualified lead from a segment where the customer stays for about three years. The second system will know more, because it was told more.

That difference is not decided on the platform. It is decided on your side.

Where to start

At the form. If a submission today does not store where the visitor came from, the most important link is missing: the one between the ad and the revenue. It can be wired up in an afternoon, and after that the data accumulates every month, and nobody can take it away from you.

If the system only sees that a form arrived, it will bring you forms. Here is how to give it back the information about which ones became business.
