Your website is read by machines now

For twenty years a website had two audiences: the person reading it, and the search engine ranking it. Now there is a third. Language models read the page, and their answers either cite you or cite somebody else.

The difference is not small. If a potential buyer asks an assistant who to hire for a particular job, the answer either includes the company or it does not. There is no click, and there is no second place.

What helps, and what you can do in a week

Write plain facts, not atmosphere. A model cannot infer your service scope from a metaphor. "We deliver solutions" produces no quote. What you do, for whom, and in which markets does.

Put structured data on the page. Marking up the organisation, the service and the author is not an SEO trick. It is the layer where a machine reads unambiguously who you are.

Publish an llms.txt. A simple text file that summarises what the site is and lists the important pages with a short description each. Little work, and it states exactly what you want to be known for.

A question and answer format quotes well. Not because it is a trick, but because a short answer that stands on its own is easier to lift into a summary than a paragraph from the middle of an essay.

Do not hide the substance in an image. Whatever is only visible in the picture does not get read.

What not to expect from this

It brings no immediate traffic, and there is no metric you can show on Monday. What it gives you is that when someone asks a machine about you, the answer is assembled from your own words rather than from guesswork.

This is the lowest cost investment available on a website today. An afternoon of work, and it needs no new system.
